Technically it’s probably not even a date, since it’s just “meeting over coffee.” But it is my very first online-initiated face-to-face meeting with a guy. And my first date coffee house meeting with romantic intentions in about 15 years. So I’m feeling nervous, self-conscious, and panicked over wardrobe choices.
Somebody obviously has to be first, and there will likely be many more first dates with others following this. My strategy with things that terrify me is to avoid them until things reach uncomfortable levels, and then jump into them in the most extreme way possible. So in the interest of getting myself desensitized to the awkwardness over with sooner rather than later, I’m serial dating this week…three different guys in three days.
Tonight’s coffee break is also the first man I ‘met’ online, via eHarmony. Well spoken and seems to have a sense of humor but not much of a talker in email. He is the cutest of the bunch, however (at least according to the photographic evidence). I guess I shouldn’t expect disaster and disappointment, but it’s kind of hard not to, as the odds of the first being Mr. Wonderful are not good. Positive thoughts….positive thoughts….

Actually, a friend of mine has a theory that the relationships that work the most online are the ones where both people are relatively new to online dating. (Before you get bitter and jaded and your dates descend into telling stories about the bad dates you’ve been on). Cautious optimism is a good attitude for online dating. Good luck!

Thanks tanasie. I need to try the cautious optimism approach.
I just had one of those dates that turned into a ‘here are all the crazy people I’ve met’ confab, but I’ll admit, after the first story I egged him on for more (for the literary value of it all…). It was actually this particular guy…I need to catch up on the blogging.
